Southern Cross Horticulture is a proud sponsor of the Ohope Beach region of Surfing for Farmers. This initiative was set up to provide farmers (including orchardists!)with an excuse to get off farm, learn a new skill and socialise with other like-minded people.

How does it work? Surfing for Farmers is in 22 locations across New Zealand, so chances are there is one near you. The program runs for approximately 13 weeks starting in December and finishing late March. Surfing for Farmers is completely free and is open to farmers but their families are welcome along to support. Each location offers the program a different night of the week but at a start time of 5.30pm. Ensure you check out their website to confirm when it is happening near you. Note: Mount Manganui and Pukehina Surfing for Farmers takes place on Thursdays, Waihi and Ohope Surfing for Farmers is on Tuesdays. These weekly sessions consist of an hour or so surf lesson, followed by a yarn and a BBQ to catch up and debrief.

Surfing for Farmers is designed for anyone and everyone to get out and have a go. Even if you’ve never surfed before, you will be welcomed here. If you are interested in joining, sign up by contacting the instructors listed on the website, or feel free to just turn up on the day and get amongst.
